In this week’s webinar, “Rock Your Holidays and Grow Your Business,” The URL Dr. answered questions about kick-starting your online marketing efforts during the busy holiday season. Here’s an excerpt from our Q&A session:
Question: “What are the best ways to get followers and likes on Facebook?”
Answer: “Unfortunately, Facebook isn’t quite as easy to get traffic into as it used to be in the beginning. First of all, whether or not somebody sees your post on Facebook is all ruled by their Edgerank algorithm, this wonderful, complex set of all these different things that Facebook looks at to decide whether or not it is going to show your post.”
“Years ago, when it started out, when you posted something (on Facebook) everybody saw it. But that’s not the case today. On a business page, only about 15% of your fan base actually sees your post in their newsfeed. So, to get that number up what you want to do is become more relevant and have Facebook take that into account. You do that by getting people to like your post, to comment on your post, and to share it. That increases your Edgerank algorithm and more people will end up seeing your post. When you first start out, number one is to send out an email notification. If you’ve got an email list, you want to send everyone on your email list an email saying ‘hey, connect with us on Facebook’. An important thing to keep in mind with Facebook and with social media in general is that posting on Facebook is one thing, promoting on Facebook is something else. You need to do both. So you want to be getting on Facebook. You want to be posting what’s going on with your business. You want to be sharing content and giving people great information. But then you also want to promote and you really need a third party tool to do that. Constant Contact has one and there are a lot of different third party tools that you can use to promote on your business Facebook page. You want to have a ‘fangate” page on it. You want to have that page that somebody hits that they have to like you to get information that you’re giving or to give coupons out or run contests. There are all these fun, interactive things that you can do on Facebook. You can even sell your product now on Facebook with different tools. You want to promote as much as you want to post. In the beginning, you’re going to send out an email. You’re going to let your current customer base know. You’re going to ask them to share it with their friends. Keep in mind that you may have to run a ‘pay-per-click’ campaign and pay for advertising on Facebook to get people into your page to like you. Getting peoples’ email addresses and getting those likes is an important part of your marketing. You don’t have to spend thousands of dollars on it, but you can spend a couple dollars a day, fifty or a hundred dollars a month. Do some advertising to help draw people into your Facebook page to like it. Because once they’ve liked it, then you have them and you can continue to market to them throughout the course of time that they are your fan.”
